Abstract
Huang and Shi (Finite Element Anal. Des. 28 (1998) 293-302) are to be congratulated for their effort in investigating concepts relating to beam on elastic foundation analysis for its application to an important problem of (discontinuity) stress analysis of cylindrical (pressure) vessels. The present communication nonetheless, presents some general comments based on conclusions made by Huang and Shi. These comments particularly concern observations about: (1) their declared acclaim of originality of the "new FEM," and (2) some errors that have arisen in the expressions given by the authors.
