Abstract
A prospective study was carried out in a group of 54 children (38 boys and 16 girls) to investigate the reliability of ultrasonography (US) in blunt renal injury. The results were correlated with intravenous pyelography (IVP) and/or computed tomography (CT). US demonstrated renal contusion in 33 of 54 patients, grade II injury in 12 of 17, grade III injury in 3, and renal pedicle injury was correctly demonstated in one patient. In addition, nine patients with accompanying hepatic and/or splenic injuries, and abnormal fluid accumulation in peritoneal cavity could be diagnosed with US. These findings were confirmed by IVP, CT and surgery. Our results have proven a high sensitivity (90.8%) and specificity (100%) for US examination in the evaluation of children with blunt renal trauma.
