Abstract

The chemistry of bagasse reveals that it contains approximately 40% cellulose, 30% hemicellulose, and 15% lignin. The structure of cellulose in bagasse is illustrated. Applications of bagasse as fuel, roofing and building material are discussed, and recent developments in cellulose conversion technology (Purdue process) are outlined.
