Abstract
This paper presents the background, related technical, business, and economic prospect of catalytic conversion of SABIC alpha-olefins to energy-saving drag-reducing polymeric (DRP), which align with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. Saudi Aramco and KFUPM have jointly patented this catalyst system, synthesized using a new concept that applied Lewis bases featuring simultaneously steric hindrance and electronic effect. The resulting product almost triples the rate of transportation of a selected grade of refinery product with a saving of about 50% pumping energy at ppm level pipeline concentration.
