Abstract
This paper addresses the economic competitiveness of photovoltaic powered irrigation in northern Sudan, when compared with other options for pumped irrigation (mainly diesel). A cost comparison is made between a photovoltaic powered pump and a diesel pump. The comparison shows a breakeven cost of solar photovoltaic module of US$4.14 per peak watt. The author concludes that these systems are economically viable and are in fact the only alternative, provided that financial incentives, government subsidies and assistance are available to the farmers who would like to use this alternative.
