Abstract
The available methods for calculating compressibility factors and phase equilibria in conventional hydrocarbon mixtures are examined to determine their applicability to oil sands bitumen systems. It is concluded that two constant equations of state, such as the Peng-Robinson equation, and the Chao-Seader method probably can be applied to bitumen systems, but that they require modifications. Calculated solubilities of CO//2 in pure high-boiling cyclic hydrocarbons and calculated densities of a typical bitumen are compared with experimental data.
