Abstract
For any nonuniform field gap with known field distribution, calculation of the negative corona threshold voltage is based on the formulation of the physical processes of the negative corona pulse recurrence. On extending the calculation to the case of sharp needles, additional simplifying assumptions are needed to make possible the formulation of these processes. In this paper, these assumptions are suggested and the calculations are conducted for sharp needles. The theoretical predictions of threshold voltages agreed with those measured experimentally. This supports the validity of the added simplifying assumptions.
