Abstract

Because the gap between energy supply and rising demand expands, reducing energy consumption and improving efficiency are critical to addressing the energy crisis in Yemen. This study develops an energy audit method to lower costs and environmental impact for apartments in Aden, Yemen. An in-depth audit of a two-room flat examines potential savings through optimal equipment usage and preventative measures. Different retrofit, appliance, glass, and shading scenarios were modeled using design builder software to balance daylight, thermal comfort, and minimal energy use. Findings show heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and lighting upgrades can provide adaptive thermal comfort while increasing efficiency. Proposed renovation measures investigate conservation options in hot and humid climates. The findings show that the house's dominant source of thermal heat gain came from the AC unit. The optimization method in design demonstrates how building envelopes can ensure performance and comfort with energy reduction. Applying this method to the Yemeni apartments cuts annual energy costs from 1906 to 1637, resulting in a 14.11 % savings of 269 through more efficient operations.
