Abstract

The mode-localization phenomenon is utilized in order to passively control structural buckling. An exact treatment is presented for the buckling problem of a multi-span column that involves certain irregularities, including intermediate torsional springs and/or displaced intermediate supports. The buckled mode shapes show that the buckling is confined to a limited part of the structure.
