Abstract

Traditional petro-based coating materials have become a source of environmental concern, posing academic and industrial challenges. Substitution of biobased agricultural materials for petro-derived materials is the ideal solution for developing alternative eco-friendly coating materials because of their renewability, plentiful availability, low cost, nontoxic, and biodegradable nature. Various biobased raw materials with enhanced comparable characteristics, such as seed oils, lignin, lipids, protein, starch, polysaccharide, polyesters, and cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL), are appropriate for 3D cross-linked thermally stable structures. The organic nature of biobased materials makes them susceptible to being attacked by natural microorganisms from bacteria to fungus. Ultimately, the coatings created from them are tested for antibacterial and antifungal. Moreover, the soil and the environment’s nonhazardous nature make them edible if food-grade components are used to formulate into the coatings. The objective of this chapter is to provide a brief overview of the development and application of biobased advanced coating materials.
