Abstract

The concepts of circuit switching and packet switching are reviewed and the functionality and ways of implementation of Broadband asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switchings are explained in details. Evolution towards integrated broadband communication network is discussed. Switching requirements, ATM switching fabrics, some performance issues, and ATM switch examples are presented. Use of the ATM switching techniques in the high speed local and metropolitan area networks are investigated. Future of the ATM switching fabrics and/or networks are presented.
