Abstract

A methodology is proposed to convert ordinal ranking of a number of criteria into numerical weights. Specifically, a simple mathematical expression is developed to provide the weight for each criterion as function of its rank and the total number of criteria. The proposed methodology is empirically developed, evaluated, and validated based on a set of experiments involving students and faculty at the authors’ university. Given only criteria ranks provided by a decision maker, this methodology can be used to determine relative weights for any set of criteria.
