Abstract
This paper describes the use of a new type of full-scale road simulator in the study of pavement systems. This equipment is suitable for the study of the effect of simulated traffic loads on the behavior of full-scale pavement built by normal construction plant and techniques. A detailed description of the loading sytem and instrumentation is given. The construction and instrumentation of a full-scale pavement comprising a Sydney Australia dolerite overlaying a sandy loam subgrade is then described. Finally, a pilot study of the effect of up to 10**5 simulated wheel passes on this pavement is reported. The response of the pavement is described in terms of both the permanent and transient deformations of the pavement surface and in terms of the stresses measured within the pavement. Refs.
