Abstract
Single variable control systems of variable structure are analysed. The conditions for the control law and for a hyperplane are determined so that a stable sliding mode is obtained. No restrictions are placed on the linear state variable representation and it is not necessary to switch all of the states. An approximation is presented which simplifies the determination of an admissible sliding hyperplane.
