Abstract
The escalating energy demand has compelled scientists to explore beyond traditional sources and to enhance the efficiency of existing ones. Addressing the energy challenges could be significantly achieved by revolutionizing technologies within the petroleum industry to ensure high yields of environmentally friendly products through efficient, sustainable production, transmission, and handling processes. The petroleum industry, known for its diversity and complexity, regularly encounters issues such as pipe corrosion and gas leaks, alongside energy losses during reactions due to poor-quality catalysts. These issues are predominantly caused due to the prolonged application of inferior materials, including catalysts, corrosion sensors, and sensing materials, and are exacerbated by the complexities involved in managing critical products. In recent years, research has demonstrated the potential of nanomaterials-based catalysts, corrosion inhibitors, and sensing devices in addressing these challenges. Nanomaterials are distinguished by their unique characteristics, which diverge significantly from traditional materials. At the nanoscale, changes in surface area and pore volume alter their fundamental properties, providing more active sites for catalysts and enhancing their efficiency in chemical reactions. Furthermore, nanomaterials can form protective thin films on metal substrates, offering excellent water repellency and corrosion resistance. Nanomaterial-based gas sensors work on the basic principle of resistance change when gas particles are absorbed, showcasing their innovative application in detection systems. This review compiles data on nanomaterials-based catalysts, corrosion inhibitors, and sensors utilized across various segments of the petrochemical industry. It aims to provide comprehensive insights into how these materials can revolutionize the industry by managing extreme operational conditions and will guide future research in these domains.
