Abstract
Background: Free radicals and lipid peroxidation have been implicated in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis experimentally, but little data is available to support the same in patients with cerebro-vascular accidents. Objectives: The present study was conducted in 50 patients of stroke with 25 controls and serum malondialdehyde (SMDA) was estimated on the first day of admission, as a measure of lipid peroxidation, to study the difference in the SMDA in the two groups as well as the difference between the thrombotic and haemorrhagic strokes. Results: While the difference in the mean SMDA levels in the controls and cases was statistically significant (p < 0.001), the difference in the mean SMDA levels between the thrombotic and haemorrhagic groups was statistically insignificant. Conclusions: The SMDA levels are raised in patients with acute stroke and hence are an indicator of the involvement of lipid peroxidation in the pathophysiology of the same. However, further studies are required to elucidate the source of the lipid peroxides in brain injury.
