Abstract

The intensifying threat of climate change, driven by all-time-high greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, demands a technological and systematic approach to achieving net-zero emissions. This chapter presents a comprehensive roadmap that integrates environmental, economic, and policy-based systems to achieve carbon neutrality. The study aims to identify priority interventions for greenhouse gas abatement, propose scalable technological innovations, and advise on socio-political reforms in emissions governance. A multiscale strategy was adopted, incorporating integrated modelling frameworks with the Sustainable Development Goals, scenario planning, policy analysis, and techno-economic analysis. The main findings present heartening outcomes: a 15% decrease in energy consumption over a three-year period and a 20% reduction in carbon emissions over five years through methodical interventions, including the integration of renewables, electrification of transport and industry and optimised circular economy measures. The study also examines the role of emerging technologies, including carbon capture and storage, direct air capture and hydrogen energy systems, supported by smart grid deployment and advanced monitoring systems. The novelty of this research lies in its cross-sectoral and systems-based approach, which combines behavioural change, legal enforcement mechanisms and adaptive policy frameworks within a single strategy. It has a robust monitoring, reporting and verification system for dynamic evaluation, ensuring transparency and accountability. Potential future applications of this roadmap include national climate action plans, industrial decarbonisation roadmaps, and international cooperation mechanisms, such as those under the Paris Agreement. This roadmap is an integrated model that global stakeholders can emulate to attain 2050 net-zero targets while being catalytic to equity, economic resilience and technological innovation.
