Abstract

This paper presents a new beam shaping technique for a linear array. The technique is based on discretization of the desired array factor at specified discrete locations. At each location, a weighted pencil beam is placed which is obtained through Taylor synthesis, whereas the weight of the pencil beam depends upon the desired array factor. Superposition of weighted pencil beams approximates the desired pattern. The method gives a better compromise between shaped beam and sidelobe level (SLL). Two beam shapes are realized using the proposed method to verify its effectiveness. A comparison with similar beam shaping methods shows that the proposed method results in accurate beam shape with low SLLs.
