Abstract

Language models have fundamentally transformed natural language processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence (AI) over the past decade. This comprehensive review examines their evolution from rule-based systems to transformer-based architectures, highlighting major breakthroughs and diverse applications. We analyze the transition to large-scale pretrained models and the emergence of multimodal and multilingual capabilities. Beyond technological advances, we assess their impact across healthcare, finance, and education. However, significant challenges remain, including computational costs, ethical concerns, and generalization limitations. We identify future research directions focusing on efficiency, interpretability, and bias mitigation. This review serves as a vital resource for researchers and practitioners, providing insights into current advances and future possibilities in language modeling.
