Abstract

Recently, retrodirective arrays - which reflect the impinging electromagnetic waves back towards the direction of incidence with maximal gain - are gaining considerable attention in backscatter-based communications; especially, backscattering at upper microwave and millimeter wave frequencies for low-powered sensing systems. To further investigate this class of arrays, we - in this paper - conduct several experiments that compare the differential radar cross section (RCS) of two coupler-based retrodirective arrays with that of a single antenna. The measurements reveal that all of these three antenna systems share a similar differential RCS beamwidth with a wide field-of-view. Furthermore, the measurements also show that poorly-isolated terminating ports in the case of hybrid-based retrodirective arrays completely degrade the retrodirectivity of the array.
